YANKEES SWEEP TO CLIMB WITHIN THREE GAMES OF TRIBE.
New York, Aug 15 - Joe DiMaggio singled in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth of the night cap before a soldout crowd of 72,468 at Yankee Stadium. Yogi Berra followed with an insurance two-run double handing Spec Shea his 10th victory on the season. New York has managed to climb within striking distance of the pace-setting Indians who reeled off a ten game win streak last week. Former pinstriper Joe Gordon seemingly knocked the Bombers out of contention on August 8 with a grand slam in the bottom of the ninth at Muncipal Stadium. The Warriors went on to sweep Bucky Harris' troops and take a six game lead which has now been sliced in half. Cleveland has faultered winning only three of their last nine against the White Sox and Browns. The Tribe still has 26 home games, a majority against the Browns and White Sox. For this reason, Cleveland remains ranked as a AL pennant favorite.

CARDINALS REELING AFTER EAST COAST TRIP, DROP 12 OF LAST 20.
Chicago, Aug 16 - Eddie Dyer's troops left home on July 26 with a 55-33 record, good for a one game lead in the National League, two up in the loss column. A tortureous three week road trip east has the Redbirds limping back home six games behind Boston. The latest setback came at the hands of the Cubs, 14-8, as every Chicagoan solved the Dyerman staff with at least a hit apiece in a 20 hit attack. The sole road highlight has been the continuing success of Stan Musial who has remarkably raised his average 40 points to a league high .412 on the trip. Musial is challenging to be the first National Leaguer to hit .400 since Bill Terry in 1930. Stan is also contending for the first triple crown in the Senior Circuit since fellow Cardinal Joe Medwick turned the trick in 1937. Musial left today's game in the ninth after Bruin starter Ralph Hamner plunked Musial with a pitch. Musial will likely be in the lineup tomorrow, however, as the Redbirds concluded this marathon road trip.

  • Joe Gordon homered in four consecutive games from August 7-9 as the Tribe won a AL high ten consecutive games. Boston won ten consecutive games in the National League earlier this season.
  • Satchel Paige made his first start on August 13 before 50,013 at Comiskey Park. The crowd mostly to see the draw of the former Negro League star left disappointed as Paige suffered his first setback. The Pale Hose scored seven runs in less than four innings on Paige en route to a 10-4 victory.
  • Cincinnati dismissed skipper Johnny Neun on August 6 and turned the helm over to 39 year old veteran pitcher Bucky Walters. The Reds made Walters a winner in his debut, a 14-2 rout of Brooklyn at Ebbets Field. Walters was 1-2 with a 5.23 ERA in 6 appearances on the mound this season.
  • Rookie Carl Erskine continues to impress with a two hit shutout in his first major league start on August 9. Fellow rookie Duke Snider, recalled from Montreal only three days earlier, provided all the offense for his roommate. Snider drove in all three Flatbush runs on two hits, including his first career home run. Interesting reality sidenote for Brooklyn - On August 16, Joe Hatten pitched a complete game with all 27 put-outs made by the infield.

Welcome to my replay of the 1948 baseball season, a season that has been described outside the City of New York as one of the best ever! This is a continuation of my replay effort beginning with the 1946 season. All major league statistical references are from my 1946 and 1947 replays. This project uses Baseball for Windows by Miller Associates, Inc. For those familiar with this software, I am using Cookie Lopez II as the micromanager and the season disk is a FPE imported disk with Bill Staffa's Merlin program. Actual lineups and transactions are used. Special thanks to Terry Simpkins for his assistance with this replay.
