JOHNSON BREAKS SOX WITH GAME-WINNING HR, 6-3.
New York, June 30 -
With one swing, Yankee thirdbaseman Bill Johnson tighted the American
League pennant chase with a ninth inning clout sending the rival Boston
Red Sox to a second consecutive defeat, 6-3, witnessed by an
evening crowd of 31,615. The Bombers took an early 3-0 lead with run scoring
hits by Joe DiMaggio and Ol' Reliable Tom Henrich who had four hits to
raise his average to .410. Vern Stephens cashed in on Vic Raschi's wildness
with a game-tying two-bagger in the third. Raschi limited the Sox to only
three hits, but allowed six free passes while strking out eight. Mickey
Harris relieved starter Jack Kramer for Boston, and silenced the Yankee
bats for two plus innings. However, Harris was lifted for a pinch-hitter
in the top of the ninth which opened the door for Earl Johnson (1-5).
The lefty surrendered safety hits to DiMaggio and McQuinn, setting the
stage for Bill Johnson's two-out heroics. Manager Joe McCarthy stated
after the game that Boston would turn to Harris again to avert the sweep
in today's contest.

DROP BRAVES INTO FIRST PLACE TIE.
Boston, June 30- Larry Jansen (5-4) notched his second
straight victory with a career day at the plate as the New York Giants
knocked the Boston Braves back into a tie atop the standings with a 10-2
rout before a night crowd of 22,117. Walker Cooper continued his return
from knee surgery last month, belting a game-breaking three run circut
clout in the fifth inning off Bill Voiselle (8-4). However, Cooper's knee
stiffened after the game and plans to visit his doctor when the team returns
to New York this weekend. It was a forgettable evening for the Braves
as outfielders Tommy Holmes and Jim Russell collided in the third inning
chasing a fly ball. Both players left the game, but are expected to return
to action as St. Louis is not allowing Boston any breathing room. In Chicago,
the Cardinals won their second straight with a 12-7 win over the Cubs.
Enos Slaughter continued his excellent season with four RBI raising his
season to league high total of 56. Chicago rallied late with all their
runs scoring after seven innings off Jim Hearn (3-2). Marty Marion had
four hits, drving in two runs, on the afternoon for the Redbirds.

- Cleveland's
Bob Feller (7-6) outdueled Detroit ace Hal Newhouser (5-6) on June 29
in a 1-0 Tribe victory. Both hurlers have not enjoyed consistent success
this season but Feller struck out 10 while limiting the Bengals to four
hits. Newhouser held the Tribe bats to only five hits. In the fifth,
Wally Judnich's two bagger was followed by a safety by Jim Hegan scoring
the game's only run. Feller's rough start has GM Veeck revising his
early season prediction of an Indian pennant now to a pennant...if Feller
returns to form.
- Detroit has hit the skids in June with the focus being
on the loss of Fred Hutchinson to shoulder troubles. Hutch has not started
for Steve O'Neill since May 25, and Tiger officials are concerned as
this mysterious shoulder ailment developed a year ago. Hutchinson had
only two starts in May and June yet rebounded to notch 12 wins. Medical
exams reveal nothing wrong. "This has me worried plenty,"
said Hutchinson. "It's impossible to take six or seven weeks out
and still finish with a respectable total of victories. I was pretty
lucky to make a strong finish last season. I hope it can happen again."

A few days ago, Brooklyn manager Leo Durocher declared he was through
experimenting with his infield as Jackie Robinson replaced Preston Ward
at first with Eddie Miksis at second. Now Gil Hodges is being given
a whirl at first. The lanky catcher was shifted for the Philadelphia
series at Ebbets Field when Bruce Edwards returned to his catching chores.
The Lip is still looking for more power, and Branch Rickey may soon
recall Roy Campenella from St. Paul.
- Other roster shakeups in Flatbush sent third string
receiver Bobby Bragan to Ft. Worth as a player manager and Don Lund
was sold to the Browns via the waiver price. Both moves leave places
for Campenella and the return of Hugh Casey from the 60 day injured
list on July 24. George Shuba was recalled from Mobile where he has
been knocking down the Southern Association fences. Ward, the young
first baseman, was sent to Mobile on option to make room for Shuba.
Meanwhile, there isn't enough Ralph Branca in the Dodger pitching. Branca
is headed toward a 20 victory year, but if the Dodgers are to fight
back among the leaders, they must get more than one well-pitched game
every five days.
