American League National League
MEMORIAL DAY DOUBLE-HEADERS

TIGERS RIP PALE HOSE, 15-4, 11-4; TAKE LEAGUE LEAD.
Detroit, May 31
- The Detroit Tigers, bridesmaids the past two seasons, have claimed the lead in the American League on Memorial Day with a twin bill sweep of the Chicago White Sox before 55,875 patrons at Briggs Stadium. Vic Wertz was the star of the series with six RBI on five hits. The Bengals scored early and often in both contests. However in the nightcap, Chicago took an early lead off Art Houtteman (3-2) that the Tigers overcame by the third inning. Steve O'Neill's troops travel east for an extended road trip to start the month of June.

BROWN SHOCKS OTTMEN; GIANTS TAKE REVENGE IN NIGHTCAP
Brooklyn, May 31 - Little-used Tommy Brown hammered a game-winning two out grand slam in the ninth inning to beat the Giants, 8-4, in the morning game before 22,753. Brown, subbing for an injured Preston Ward, saved Ralph Branca from his first defeat of the season, and raised the spirits of the Flatbush fans. The afternoon tilt drew 34,349 that went home in tears as the Giants handed morning winner Erv Palica the loss in a 15-2 drubbing. The Jints took their ninth inning frustration on reliever Harry Taylor who is returning from an appendicitis operation performed on April 29. Taylor took one on the chin for a depleted Brooklyn bullpen that has lost veteran fireman Hugh Casey for 60 days. Casey was placed on the disabled list after slipping on the stairs over his Brooklyn tavern and fell heavily on his right side.

  • Detroit's Cleveland rookie hurler Gene Bearden won his third game as the Tribe took the lidlifter of a Memorial Day twinbill with the St. Louis Browns, 6-4, before 48,961 at Memorial Stadium. The Brownies won the nightcap on Cliff Fannin's shutout, 8-0. Fannin raised his record to 4-1.
  • Boston dropped two games behind the Tigers with a split of a doubleheader at Shibe Park. Nelson Potter was unable to hold the lead for the Mackmen as the Red Sox scored five times in the eighth to take a 10-6 opening win. Joe Coleman continued his impressive start with a 4-1 win. Coleman surpassed his win total from last season (7-11) with a perfect 8-0 mark. Boston is next to last in the AL in pitching with a 4.37 ERA. Manager Joe McCarthy has not settled upon a set rotation as nine pitchers have received starts with an average of six days rest.
  • Rookie Cliff Mapes hit his first career round-tripper in a 9-2 comeback win at Washington. Mapes wears number 3 for the pinstripes. Nobody is predicting Ruthian success for the Nebraskan, but he certainly is impressing manager Bucky Harris.

In other action...

  • St. Louis maintained its two game lead in the National League with a doubleheader sweep over the Reds at Crosley Field. Al Brazle (5-1) and Murry Dickson (5-3) went the distance in each of the Redbird wins. Enos Slaughter drove in four runs in the nightcap.
  • The stitches have been removed from the knee of New York catcher Walker Cooper and the end of the Giant's convalescence is near. He was released from the hospital May 21. Cooper's replacement, rookie Wes Westrum, is batting only .122.
  • Bert Haas, third baseman for the Phillies, sat up in a wheel chair for the first time, May 22, following an operation for a skull fracture, at Temple University Hospital. Haas was injured by a line drive to the head during batting practice in St. Louis. He expects he will be back in the lineup within a month.
  • On May 26, Earl Torgeson hammered a three run circuit clout to defeat Cincinnati with two outs in the ninth, 6-5. Torgeson's round tripper came off Reds fireman Harry Gumpert (3-1) who was hindered by poor Redleg defense, namely Virgil Stallcup's throwing error in the ninth.

Welcome to my replay of the 1948 baseball season, a season that has been described outside the City of New York as one of the best ever! This is a continuation of my replay effort beginning with the 1946 season. All major league statistical references are from my 1946 and 1947 replays. This project uses Baseball for Windows by Miller Associates, Inc. For those familiar with this software, I am using Cookie Lopez II as the micromanager and the season disk is a FPE imported disk with Bill Staffa's Merlin program. Actual lineups and transactions are used. Special thanks to Terry Simpkins for his assistance with this replay.
