TIGERS SNAP FIVE GAME SKID, BEAT BROWNS, 4-2.
Detroit, May 16- Art Houtteman went the distance for his first win of the season, and halting the Tigers five game losing streak. The Browns took an early two run lead off Houtteman in the third on Al Zarilla's two run double. But the Bengals countered quickly as Houtteman and Neil Berry scored to tie the game on Pat Mullin's single. Vic Wertz opened the fourth with a triple, and scored on Sam Vico's fly out to give Detroit the lead. Off the field, the Tigers staged a preview of their half-million dollar lighting system on May 10. Fortunately, no game was scheduled as owner Walter O. Briggs threw the switch, in a pouring rain, to illuminate Briggs Stadium for the first time.
Detroit will play the first of 11 night games on June 15 vs. Philadelphia.

HIGBE HOMERS, KNOCKS REDBIRDS FROM PERCH.
St. Louis, May 16 - Kirby Higbe evened his record to 3-3 with eight strong innings in yesterday's 6-3 Pittsburgh win, but perhaps the former Dodger will remember the day for his work at the plate. Higbe drove in a pair of runs, including a solo home run in the fourth inning off Cardinal starter Murry Dickson (3-2). Frankie Gustine collected three hits for the Corsairs in the victory. St. Louis rallied in the ninth off Higbe as Ron Northey's pinch-hit single scored Del Rice. Pittsburgh center fielder Johnny Hopp collided with Red Schoendienst on the play, and left the field. After the delay, Vic Lombardi relieved Higbe and induced Stan Musial to hit into a game ending double play to end the game.

  • Early Wynn (4-2) blanked Boston, 4-0, as the Sox managed only three hits against the Senator twirler. Wynn issued six free passes, but was the benefactor of three double plays. But success on the road is familar tune to Senator pitchers who are complaining about the mound at Griffith Stadium. Washington is 4-12 at home this season. When the team returns, the grounds crew will have a new mound. "Our mound is the lowest in the league," said Kuehl. "It is only two and a half inches, and I'm requesting the
groundskeeper to raise it to six. Our guys ought to like it better"
  • Outfielder Carden Gillenwater has made his way back to the majors as the Senators purchased his contract from the American Association's Milwaukee Brewer club on May 12. The acquisition was part of a three-cornered deal that saw Marv Rickert go to Milwaukee from the Reds who, in turn, obtained Danny Litwhiler from the Braves. Gillenwater is hitless in his first two games with the Nats, but was hitting .385 with 23 RBI.
  • May 13 was Cliff Fannin's 24th birthday, but the St. Louis Brownie hurler did not like the present the Athletics handed to him the night before. Fannin (2-1) suffered his first defeat of the season in a 6-4 loss. Fannin became unglued in the fifth as he committed a costly error allowing the Mackmen to plate five runs in the frame. It was the Browns third straight defeat and the Athletics third victory in a row.

  • Benny Zientara singled in two runs to break a 3-3 tie in the ninth to lift the Cincinnati Reds past the Chicago Cubs, 6-3, at Wrigley Field. Hank Borowy took the loss, his first of the season against two wins. Reds' rookie Hank Sauer drove in one run to lift his league leading total to 24.
  • Despite last season's team MVP, Bob Elliott, off to a terrible start, the Boston Braves lead the Senior Circuit. On Saturday, Warren Spahn won his second game as the Braves beat the Dodgers, 4-1, at Ebbets Field. Jeff Heath, an off-season acquisition from the Browns, hit his 3rd homer and Bill Salkeld hit his 4th of the season. Rookie Alvin Dark, from Louisana State University, leads the NL with a .380 batting average.
  • May 20 serves as the roster cut-down date. Teams will reduce roster size to 25 players. Brooklyn reduced its roster by sending several players back to Montreal including prospects, outfielder Duke Snider and catcher Roy Campenella. Pitcher Willie Ramsdell who took the loss on Saturday to Boston was also shipped to the Royals of the International League.

Welcome to my replay of the 1948 baseball season, a season that has been described outside the City of New York as one of the best ever! This is a continuation of my replay effort beginning with the 1946 season. All major league statistical references are from my 1946 and 1947 replays. This project uses Baseball for Windows by Miller Associates, Inc. For those familar with this software, I am using Cookie Lopez II as the micromanager and the season disk is a FPE imported disk with Bill Staffa's Merlin program. Actual lineups and transactions are used. Special thanks to Terry Simpkins for his assistance with this replay.

I have a collection of The Sporting News from the late 70's and early 80's on sale from time to time on Ebay.
